How to use the Roamer SMART BMS app

Roamer SMART

We've made managing your battery super simple with our Roamer SMART app which will help you to track and monitor the status of your battery from the comfort of your campervan, boat or home.

You can download your BMS app from the App Store or Play Store – make sure you get the right one for your battery. This guide relates to the new SMART4 battery app only. The correct app for SMART4 batteries is called the ‘Roamer SMART’ app. For older models and app versions please contact Roamer Support

BMS set-up guide

Install Roamer SMART

Download the app from the App Store or Play Store. During installation, make sure you allow Bluetooth and GPS connections when prompted or you will not be able to connect (don't worry we do not collect your data).

Search & connect

Move within 10m of your battery and begin searching. Click your battery from the device list and enter the pairing password. The default password is 1234. This can be changed later if required.

Monitor & track

After connection you will see the main battery status page, this gives you all the key information you need to monitor your battery in real time
including state of charge, current, voltages and protection warnings.

Key features

The first thing you’ll notice is the large state of charge dial suggesting how much battery is remaining. Also, pay close attention to the voltage too as this is a key indicator of the battery state of charge -voltage is a true indication of the battery state whereas the percentage is a calculated value and can be incorrect if it has not been calibrated recently. The most important BMS protections are controlled by voltage so don’t worry if it says 100% and it’s still charging – until it reaches 14.4V then it is not actually full.

The status tabs below the state of charge dial indicate what modes are currently active. So for example, when charge and discharge are highlighted – this means that both charge and discharge are enabled and there are no protections in place. The written status message also tells you what is going on with the battery, in normal circumstances it will tell you the battery is working perfectly but if there are any BMS protections active then it will tell you.

BMS controls & settings

In order to use the battery controls and change BMS parameters, you will need to enter a password. The default password is 628203. As with the pairing password, this can be changed but if you do so, please make sure you chose a memorable number and write it down somewhere safe.

The controls at the top of the page allow you to set whether the battery is allowed to charge / discharge, set the Smart Sleep and Float charge modes, activate emergency mode and disable the charge limiter function. By default the first four should be highlighted and the last two should be ‘off’. You are unlikely to need to change these regularly and we recommend you leave these on the default settings. The Roamer SMART app allows you to change BMS parameters but we strongly recommend you do not change any of these settings without speaking to Roamer first. Any changes made here will affect the operation of your battery and the protection mode thresholds which can lead to unexpected problems.

Tips for using BMS

We have provided some additional tips below to help you track and monitor your battery with ease.

Only use one device at a time
The nature of Bluetooth Low Energy means that the battery can only connect to one device at a time. If you need to change device, force close the app on the previous device.
 Pay attention to status messages
The status message on the home page of the app tells you what is going on with the battery. If there is a protection mode in place, this section will tell you why.
Do not turn off charge/discharge
Only use the app to turn off charge/discharge in an emergency. You can shutdown the BMS completely using the power button on the top of the battery.
Battery addressing
If using multiple linked batteries and CANbus communication, you need to set the ‘address’ of each battery. By default this will 0. You should set additional batteries to 1,2,3 etc in the app.
Emergency mode
The emergency mode function will remove all BMS protections for a period of 30 minutes. This is designed to allow you to charge a battery that has dropped into low voltage protection mode.
Setting up ‘Requested Charge’ parameters
These settings determine master charge settings when using a canbus connected charger. An example is the DVCC features on Victron GX devices.
